Article ArticleThe online marketplace rocks The Street for Q4 after a transitional year that saw a shift in its core business.
eBay's transition from a pure online auction site to more of a wholesale liquidator and transaction-processing company paid nice dividends in its fourth quarter when it reported adjusted earnings of $585.8 million, or $0.44 a share, on sales of $2.37 billion -- a 16 percent improvement from the year-ago quarter.
eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) shares closed off $1.03, or 4 percent, to $22.23 ahead of the earnings release but surged up $0.51, or 2 percent, to $22.74 in after-hours trading.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters predicted the San Jose, Calif.-based company would return adjusted earnings of $0.40 a share on sales of $2.28 billion.
Last quarter, eBay pocketed $349.7 million, or $0.27 a share, on sales of $2.24 billion.
http://www.ecommerce-guide.com/article.php/3859731Facebook today said that it has struck a one-year partnership with security giant McAfee to better stamp out spam and malware from the world's biggest social network.
Through the exclusive arrangement, McAfee (NYSE: MFE) is offering Facebook users a free six-month subscription to its security product, and a discounted rate after the trial expires.
The two companies partnered to develop a custom suite of security tools, including a software application, a scanning and repair tool and a spate of education materials to promote safe computing practices.
"For the rare case in which an account is compromised, we've developed a unique process that requires the account owner to take steps to secure the account and learn security best practices," Facebook project manager Jake Brill wrote in a blog post explaining the partnership. "We've also incorporated custom McAfee software into this process for people identified as having infected computers."
http://www.ecommerce-guide.com/article.php/3858926Despite the bad name it gives to the e-commerce industry as a whole, passing off pirated wares as legitimate is far from new on the Web, and it continues to proliferate despite efforts by law enforcement agencies, software groups and e-commerce hubs like eBay to crack down on the practice. At least some headway is being made against the threat, though -- ECommerce-Guide.com delves into one recent foiled pirating ring and looks at how its shady sales took place.
A software pirate responsible for ripping off nearly 8,000 online customers and a handful of leading software vendors was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy, mail fraud and criminal copyright infringement charges.
Matthew Thomas Purse, 32, of Gilbert, Ariz. also received three years probation from a federal judge in Phoenix, and was hit with $12,000 in fines and restitution for his role in the elaborate software piracy scam.
Purse, along with Christopher Loring Walters, 29, of Newport Beach, Calif., created multiple eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) merchant accounts between September 2004 and February 2006 from which they sold counterfeit copies of software developed by Apple, Corel, McAfee, Symantec and other vendors.
Walters remains a fugitive, according to a statement released by the Software & Information Industry Association, a trade association for the software and digital content industry that assisted the U.S. Department of Justice in the investigation.

ForeSee Results has ranked the largest online retailers' customer service and found that Amazon has pulled ahead of Netflix to take the lead -- with a score that's the highest ever recorded by the firm. ECommerce-Guide.com has the story.
A new study has found that online retailers reached a high-water mark for customer satisfaction this holiday season, with the 40 largest e-commerce vendors posting across-the-board improvements over last year.
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) took the top spot with a score of 87 on the 100-point American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), a methodology developed by researchers at the University of Michigan that is used to gauge consumer sentiment in a variety of areas across government and the private sector.
ForeSee Results, the research firm that conducted the study, said that Amazon's score was the highest it has ever recorded for online retail, and represented a 3.6 percent increase over the firm's mark last year, when it tied for the top spot with Netflix. This year, Netflix checked in just behind Amazon with a score of 86.

On Wednesday the New York Times Co announced that it would deploy a "metered model," charging readers for access after they read a certain number of articles in a month. Those readers who get the paper delivered at home would get free access to the website.
"This process of rethinking our business model has also been driven by our desire to achieve additional revenue diversity that will make us less susceptible to the inevitable economic cycles," Chief Executive Janet Robinson said in a statement.
The company provided no detailed information on its latest plan but it looks like it will use similar model used by the Financial Times.
"It's a big deal for the industry because the question that's been out there for a year or more is whether the general news, the mass news publishers would go in a paid-content direction," said Rob Grimshaw, the FT.com's managing director. "A major player breaking cover on something like this is a bit step."
The main concern related to the move is that the media site may lose its readers which in turn may result in losing ad revenues.
"The obvious downside risk that they very likely lose half their current readership, meaning ad revenue will go down by half as well," said Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey.
